Fabio's Story
Like so many others, Fabio came to Australia to improve his English and decided to stay. He found a job with Dialog Information Technology who was very happy to sponsor him. He started in Dialog’s Brisbane office but now works in Sydney. Here is his story:
"Moving to another country is a big undertaking. Applying for a visa, organising the move and a 20 + hours flight are just the beginning. But after the first few stressful weeks of settling in, I was able to enjoy this wonderful country.
"Living in a different country with people who speak a different language to my home language and also interacting with people from almost every part of the world is a fantastic experience. You will benefit greatly from the experience of living in a multi-cultural society.
"The quality of life, the weather and a rising economy which is experiencing a shortage of qualified and experienced people in some work fields like Information Technology, offer very good conditions to a Brazilian worker who might be thinking about migrating to Australia.
"After 1 year working as an IT consultant for Dialog, I am positive that it is providing me the opportunity to acquire professional, strategic and personal skills appropriate to management responsibilities at an international standard.
"If I could offer advice to other Brazilian thinking about moving to Australia to work for Dialog I would tell them not to hesitate because it’s a great opportunity in your life and career.
"Australia and Brazil are very similar. Some differences that I have found are that shopping hours are shorter in Australia than in Brazil and it is expensive to hire people to assist in the home such as maids and nannies.
"On the other hand, I believe that Australia provides a safe and relaxing environment to raise children. Here in Australia, I have Brazilian friends who have children studying in the public school system. And they are very happy with the quality of the curriculum provided in these schools. These families are accepted by other Australian families as I have been, and have adjusted well into society.
"In comparison to Brazil, the public education system in Australia is a higher standard and you also have the option of sending your children to study in a choice of private schools at a reasonable cost.
"While the quality of the public health system varies and is not always perfect, it still works better, while the quality of hospitals is far better than in Brazil. When I first came to Australia, I had to use the public hospital once due to a broken foot. In my case, I was attended to very satisfactorily. Now that I am working, it is more beneficial for me to pay for private health insurance which can cover a range of additional requirements."
